The blur and busyness of the summer means it goes fast and it is easy to lose track of time trying to do it all. We often find ourselves doing lots of extra things in the summer because we want to make the most of it - we take vacations, and then all of a sudden your kids have had a growth spurt and need all the news things! This can make money feel tight and leave many families feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Taking some time to organize what you actually need can help to keep some money in your wallet! Here are some great money saving tips for this back to school season.
Take inventory of what you do have - block some time out to do a closet clean out of clothes, shoes and jackets to determine what can go. This will give you the opportunity to make a list of exactly what your kids do need for the shift to colder weather.
Don’t forget to add backpacks, lunch bags and school supplies to this inventory - you may be surprised at what you do have, but you can also make a list of the things you do need simultaneously.
Watch for long weekend sales. This can help to reduce the total costs of what you’re spending for the season. Remember even 10%-20% discounts can add up. Subscribe to the newsletters of your favourite kids wear stores - they often give a sign up discount code for new members.
Talk with other parents, maybe you can do some swapping and exchanging for some of the needed items, kids grow fast and sometimes things are still like new when they are outgrown.
Secondhand shopping is all the rage! Get great items at a fraction of the price by visiting your favourite local thrift shops.
Only get what you need, often schools post supply lists - shop from it, that way you aren’t guessing and ending up with more than you need .
Most importantly, make a budget - don’t spend outside your means if possible. You don’t have to buy everything all at once, prioritize and go from there.
This really does work, so I encourage you to take some time out to plan before shopping - saving you time and money in the long run!
